Sunderland: A remarkable season could still end in Europe

Sunderland were widely tipped to struggle after promotion, but Regis Le Bris has transformed the mood on Wearside. Rather than simply surviving, the Black Cats enter the final weekend in the top half and still have an outside chance of qualifying for Europe.

The equation is demanding but not impossible. Sunderland must beat Chelsea and then hope results elsewhere go their way. The best-case scenario would see them climb into seventh and reach the Europa League, but that depends on Manchester United beating Brighton, Liverpool overcoming Brentford and Sunderland doing their own job at the Stadium of Light.

Even the possibility of Conference League football is an achievement in itself. Sunderland sit just one point behind Chelsea and Brentford, and victory would at least give them a chance of leapfrogging the Blues in the final standings.

Le Fee now has 11 goal contributions this season, three more than Brian Brobbey, while his assist for Brobbey against Everton moved him level with Granit Xhaka on six assists.

Xhaka has been one of Sunderland’s most important players and could equal his personal Premier League best of seven assists if he creates a goal on Sunday.

The historical challenge is clear. Sunderland have not completed a league double over Chelsea since the 2000-01 season, but this campaign gives them a genuine opportunity to end that wait.

Chelsea: Motivation and European uncertainty

Chelsea travel to Wearside after finally ending a seven-match wait for a Premier League victory with a 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday.

That result gave Callum McFarlane’s side a lift, but it also complicated the debate around their season. Chelsea can still finish in Europe, but whether the squad and supporters are fully enthusiastic about another Conference League campaign remains open to question.

The Blues won that competition in 2024-25 under Enzo Maresca, and another third-tier European campaign may not excite the fanbase. However, a win over Sunderland could still lift Chelsea above Brighton if the Seagulls drop points against Manchester United.

McFarlane’s interim spell ends with this fixture, and his approach will be interesting. Chelsea are trying to secure back-to-back Premier League wins for the first time since their four-game streak between January and February.

Away form is a concern. Chelsea have not won on the road since early March, when they beat Aston Villa 4-1. That poor travelling run should give Sunderland confidence.

Enzo Fernandez has been Chelsea’s most decisive player recently. His goal and match-winning assist against Tottenham took him to 14 direct goal contributions for the season, made up of 10 goals and four assists.

If Cole Palmer, Pedro Neto, Joao Pedro and Fernandez all start, Chelsea should have the technical quality to hurt Sunderland. The bigger question is whether they can match the home side’s motivation and intensity.
