Norway 1-4 France: Dembélé Hat-Trick Fires Les Bleus To Group I Top Spot
Ousmane Dembélé scored a stunning first-half hat-trick as France beat rotated Norway 4-1 in Boston to finish top of World Cup 2026 Group I.
Dembélé Takes Centre Stage As France Top Group I
France finished top of World Cup 2026 Group I in emphatic style as Ousmane Dembélé scored a superb first-half hat-trick in a 4-1 win over Norway at Boston Stadium.
The match had been billed as a possible showdown between Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappé, but Norway’s team selection changed the narrative before kick-off. Stale Solbakken made 10 changes after two opening group wins, with Haaland among those rested.
France, led on the night by assistant coach Guy Stephan while Didier Deschamps was away following the death of his mother, took full advantage. Dembélé struck in the seventh, 20th and 32nd minutes, delivering one of the fastest hat-tricks in men’s World Cup history.
Norway replied through Thelo Aasgaard, but France remained in control and added a fourth deep into stoppage time through Désiré Doué.
Mbappé Starts Fast, Dembélé Finishes Ruthlessly
Mbappé almost made headlines after only 21 seconds when he crashed an effort off the underside of the crossbar. But instead of becoming the main story, he became the creator for Dembélé’s early dominance.
France broke through in the seventh minute after winning the ball in Norway’s half. Mbappé spread play to the right, where Dembélé squared up his marker and hammered a finish past Egil Selvik.
The second came in the 20th minute. France countered at speed, and Dembélé cut in from the right onto his left foot before curling a beautiful finish into the far corner.
It was ruthless, elegant and devastating. Norway’s rotated side had no answer to his movement, balance and finishing.
Aasgaard Responds Before Dembélé Completes Hat-Trick
Norway responded quickly, scoring only 79 seconds after France’s second. From the restart, Antonio Schjelderup helped create the chance, and Thelo Aasgaard swept the ball past Mike Maignan to make it 2-1.
That briefly gave Norway hope, but Dembélé ended any comeback threat before half-time. In the 32nd minute, he again cut onto his left foot and curled another superb effort beyond Selvik, with Norway defenders frozen around him.
The goal made history. It was the first time a player had scored three goals in the opening half of a World Cup match since Oleg Salenko in 1994, and the second-quickest men’s World Cup hat-trick from the start of a match.
France also produced a remarkable team move for the third goal: 17 passes in the build-up, with all 11 players touching the ball.
Maignan Saves Penalty Before Doué Adds Late Fourth
The tempo dropped after the break, but there was still drama. Norway had a chance to reduce the deficit when Jørgen Strand Larsen stepped up from the penalty spot, only for Maignan to save.
That stop made Maignan the first French goalkeeper to save a World Cup penalty, excluding shootouts, since Joël Bats in 1986.
Dembélé was withdrawn after 65 minutes, taking his bow after a career-defining international display. France then added a fourth in stoppage time when Bradley Barcola assisted Désiré Doué, who looped a header into the net in the 94th minute.

France Analysis: Dembélé Turns Supporting Role Into Main Event
Dembélé had taken a supporting role to Mbappé in France’s first two matches, but this was his night. His finishing was clinical, his decision-making was sharp, and his third goal showed the confidence of a player in full flow.
France’s balance was also impressive. Mbappé had fewer touches than usual in the first half, but he still assisted the first two goals. Les Bleus showed they can win through different attacking channels.
The result gives France three group-stage wins for the first time since 1998, when they went on to win the tournament. This performance strengthened France’s status as one of the favourites.
Norway Analysis: Rotation Shows Bigger Knockout Plan
Norway had already qualified before the match, and Solbakken’s team selection suggested he was willing to accept second place in exchange for freshness before the knockout stage.
Resting Haaland removed the main storyline and weakened Norway’s attacking threat. Aasgaard’s goal was well taken, but the rotated side struggled to manage France’s early pressure and individual quality.
Strand Larsen’s missed penalty was another frustration. Norway will expect Haaland to return for the last 32, where they face Ivory Coast in Dallas.
