Haiti: Back on the World Cup stage after 52 years

Haiti return to the World Cup for the first time since 1974, when their debut campaign in West Germany ended with three defeats and 14 goals conceded.

This appearance carries far more than sporting meaning. The Grenadiers qualified despite having to play all of their home fixtures away from Haiti because of severe domestic security issues. Head coach Sebastien Migne has also not set foot on the Caribbean island since taking charge 18 months ago.

That background makes qualification a remarkable achievement. Haiti came through CONCACAF qualifying with six wins and two draws from 10 matches, eventually securing their place with back-to-back victories over Costa Rica and Nicaragua in November 2025.

Ranked 83rd in the world and the second-lowest ranked side at the tournament, Haiti arrive as clear outsiders in Group C. Even so, they have already shown enough resilience and organisation to suggest they should not be treated lightly.

Their warm-up results have been mixed. Haiti failed to beat Tunisia and Iceland in March, then produced a statement 4-0 win over New Zealand before losing 2-1 to Peru in their final friendly.

Migne is expected to continue with a 4-4-2 setup, giving Haiti clear structure and a direct attacking route. The front pairing of Wilson Isidor and Duckens Nazon should be central to that plan.

Nazon remains Haiti’s all-time leading scorer with 44 goals in 78 appearances, while Isidor brings pace, physical presence and club-level quality. If Haiti are to cause problems, those two must make Scotland’s centre-backs uncomfortable.

Scotland: A chance to break the major-tournament curse

Scotland are back at the World Cup for the first time since 1998, and the historical symmetry is difficult to ignore. Their last tournament also placed them in a group with Brazil and Morocco, and it ended with a bottom-place finish.

Steve Clarke’s side will be determined to write a different story this time. Scotland have appeared at eight previous World Cups and four European Championships, but they have never progressed beyond the group stage at a major tournament.

That record has become a national burden. This opener against Haiti is therefore not just an opportunity; it is a fixture Scotland will feel they must win if they are serious about finally reaching the knockouts.

The qualification campaign ended in dramatic style. Scotland beat Denmark 4-2 to finish top of their UEFA qualifying group, with stoppage-time goals from Kieran Tierney and Kenny McLean, including McLean’s extraordinary strike from the halfway line.

Clarke has since signed a four-year contract extension, giving Scotland continuity heading into the tournament. A difficult March window brought 1-0 defeats to Japan and Ivory Coast, but the response has been strong.

Scotland beat Curacao 4-1 at Hampden Park before thrashing Bolivia 4-0 last weekend. If they score four again against Haiti, it would be the first time since 1928-29 that Scotland have won three consecutive matches while scoring at least four goals in each.

The attacking spark has come from Lawrence Shankland, who contributed three goals and one assist across those warm-up wins. He is expected to start, potentially alongside Che Adams, in a 4-4-2 shape.

Haiti have no fresh injury concerns, so Sebastien Migne could stick with the 4-4-2 system used in the final warm-up matches against New Zealand and Peru.

Captain Johny Placide, the oldest and most-capped player in the squad, is expected to start in goal. He could be protected by a back four of Carlens Arcus, Ricardo Ade, Hannes Delcroix and Martin Experience.

Jean-Ricner Bellegarde should bring energy and ball-carrying quality in midfield, while Wilson Isidor and Duckens Nazon are expected to lead the attack.

Angus Gunn is expected to start in goal, although 43-year-old Craig Gordon, the oldest player at World Cup 2026, remains an option.
