Qatar: Searching for a first World Cup breakthrough

Qatar return to the World Cup finals for only the second time, following their appearance as hosts in 2022. That campaign ended in group-stage disappointment, so the Maroons arrive in 2026 trying to prove that they can compete more convincingly on the world stage.

Julen Lopetegui’s side secured their place at this summer’s tournament with a 2-1 victory over the UAE last October, but their preparation since then has been far from ideal.

Qatar have gone six matches without a win since qualification, and their final warm-up fixtures did not provide much momentum. They lost 1-0 to the Republic of Ireland at the end of May before drawing 1-1 with El Salvador on June 6.

That run leaves questions over confidence, attacking rhythm and defensive control before facing one of Europe’s most consistent tournament teams.

The positive for Qatar is that Group B looks open. With Canada and Bosnia-Herzegovina also involved, third place may still be enough to progress, but a positive result in the opening game would completely change the mood around their campaign.

Qatar have also beaten Switzerland before, recording a 1-0 friendly win in 2018. That result will not carry huge weight in a World Cup opener, but it gives the Maroons at least one encouraging reference point.

The attacking responsibility should fall on Akram Afif, who has scored 39 international goals and remains Qatar’s most important creative player. He is expected to operate in the front three alongside Yusuf Abdurisag and Edmilson Junior.

If Qatar are to trouble Switzerland, Afif must find space between the lines and turn limited possession into direct attacking moments.

Switzerland: Reliable, experienced and difficult to beat

Switzerland arrive at World Cup 2026 with far greater tournament experience. This will be their 13th appearance at the finals, and they have reached the round of 16 in each of the last three editions.

The Swiss have not been eliminated in the World Cup group stage since 2010, so Murat Yakin’s squad will know that expectations are clear: escape Group B and give themselves a chance in the knockout rounds.

Historically, Switzerland’s best World Cup performances came in 1934, 1938 and 1954, when they reached the quarter-finals. The current generation will be aiming to move beyond the last-16 ceiling that has defined recent tournaments.

Recent form suggests they are capable of a strong start. Switzerland have lost only one of their last 14 matches in all competitions, a 4-3 friendly defeat to Germany in March.

Their final preparations included a 4-1 victory over Jordan and a 1-1 draw with Australia. Those results should give them enough confidence before facing Qatar in Santa Clara.

Switzerland’s strength lies in balance. Manuel Akanji, Nico Elvedi and Ricardo Rodriguez bring defensive experience, while Granit Xhaka and Remo Freuler provide structure and control in midfield.

In attack, Yakin has decisions to make. Breel Embolo is an option through the middle and has 24 international goals, but Zeki Amdouni is expected to start as the central forward.

If Switzerland impose their midfield control early, they should be able to limit Qatar’s counter-attacking threat and create enough chances to justify their favourites’ status.

Afif is Qatar’s main goal threat, having scored 39 times for his country. Edmilson Junior is still searching for his first international goal and will hope to make an impact on the World Cup stage.

Mahmud Abunada could start in goal, while Pedro Miguel and Boualem Khoukhi are expected to operate in the defensive line.
