Betting Scandal:Five players charged over betting on game

According to an FA statement, five players, four players then at Accrington – Jay Harris, David Mannix, Robert Williams and Peter Cavanagh plus one who was at Bury,Andrew Mangan, have been charged over betting on game.They have been charged to have placed bets on Bury to win the match against Accrington.The match ended 2-0 on May 2008.This come after an investigation into unusual betting patterns on a League Two match between Accrington Stanley and Bury last season by the FA.They have been alleged to have placed stakes to the value of approximately David Mannix £4,000; Mangan £3,500; Jay Harris £2,000; Williams £1,000; and Cavanagh on a £5 accumulator.All five have until April 23 to respond to the charges.FA rules disallow players, managers or coaching staff for betting on the result or progress of any match or competition in which the participant is participating or has any direct or indirect influence.
